This young man is Serenity's high school sweetheart. They dated in freshman, sophomore, and half of junior year before they were forcibly broken up. Avery was insecure and jealous and, having been raised in the cliche broken home, dealt with these issues with violence. However, he was so charming and intelligent that nobody suspected that he was abusive until Serenity's brother caught him grabbing her wrists and throwing her on the ground. The two young men got into a fight and Avery eventually ended up victorious, both physically and legally. He really did love Serenity, and the two stayed in contact. When Serenity graduated from her boarding school in NYC and came back to South Carolina, however, Avery was gone, and they lost contact with each other.
So yes, it's up to you to decide where he went and why he's on the ship now. Neither of them would know that the other was on the ship. And of course, it's entirely possible that Avery has changed since the last time they saw each other. We can discuss plot ideas once he's taken, but I don't think they'll necessarily end up back together. We can figure it out. (:
